How creative were you last year?

Throughout my year 12 media studies course,my creative skills were conveyed through the use of planning with my partner. The planning enabled me to expand on the initial ideas for our opening title sequence . Which was based upon a psychopath finding the next victims.

In order to emphasise the burning of the photographs ,I thought it would be creative to reflect this in the title sequence through the use of the titles looking like a glowing fire ( refer to picture 1) . My creative skills were also shown through the use of filming in which I experimented with a diverse range of camera shots .

This can be conveyed in the use of a close up shot of lee (the clown) wearing the clown mask . Instead of filming the close up shot from a front view ,i decided to film the shot from the side using a flash light to create a shadow in the background ( refer to picture 2) . Hence creating suspense and mystery.

What digital technology did you use last year ?

The digital technology that I used last year consisted of You Tube , Microsoft PowerPoint , final cut pro and a  digital camera .

YouTube enabled me to research past opening title sequences made by other students . This gave me a clear perspective of what I shouldn't and should incorporate within my opening title sequence . Such as camera shots mise- en -scene and the duration of each shot .

Using final cut pro to edit my opening title sequence . Enabled me to create a mysterious effect by deciding to use the transition effect of ‘fade to black’. Therefore when a scene faded to black this made that audience anticipate the next scene . I found final cut pro a challenge to use at the start however I got the hang of how to use final cut pro towards the end.  

Through the use of a digital camera this enabled me to film the shots for the opening title sequence . such as the canted angle shot the clown ( refer to picture 3) . which created the effect of instability .Therefore emphasising how much of a psychopath the clown was .

What research and planing did you do last year in order to be successful?

In order to gain a deeper and a better understanding of thriller opening title sequences i conducted research into the codes and conventions of thriller films.In which i found out that a thriller film can be defined as a film with a desire to keep the audience anticipated through the use of the elements tension, suspense and  excitement . Therefore this made me aware to incorporate the three elements within my opening title  sequence.

The research also allowed me to find out the common codes and conventions used in thriller films, that I could use for my opening title sequence, such as low camera angles , mirrors and a dark location. Following  on from the research.I decide that my colleague should have a discussion on what ideas we had for the opening title sequence. This allowed us to focus on the idea we thought had the most most potential.

After the discussion my colleague then constructed a mindmap which broken down the areas such as props, costumes and the plot which needed to be addressed in my opening title sequence. This gave me a clearer perspective of how my opening title sequence would look.In order to improve my research and planing i felt that it would have been a great idea to my filming check list of what needed to be filmed. So that the filming  would have gone smoother.

What post-production technology did you use last year? 

ThePostproduction technology that I used last year consisted of final cut pro , a Mac computer   and a digital camera.The digital camera that I used allowed me to transfer the shots I filmed to the Mac computer via a  USB lead. In order to to use the final cut pro software to construct the final product of my opening title  sequence.

What conventions did you apply to your coursework?

A few examples of the conventions that I applied were a gun (prop) , low key lighting and the  non diegetic sound of background music. Low key lighting was Incorporated in my opening title sequence by filming underneath the assembly hall (refer to picture 4). Furthermore this Incorporated the elements of a thriller film of suspense and mystery.

The gun highlighted how the clown tortures his victims. Whom the audience will have sympathy for. As the  gun will create an image created an image of the unbearable suffering the clown brings to his victim's.

ABPNB - Brilliance (Mysterious Suspense Music) was used as the non diegetic sound of background music.  Due to the fact that i felt that this was the best music to use as the beat of the drum came in the right place when the drama started.
